Hinge Selection: Full Overlay, Half Overlay, and Inset Differences

When choosing cabinet door hinges, the position of the door relative to the cabinet body is decisive. Cup (concealed) hinges come in three main types:

Hinge types

  • Full overlay: the door completely covers the side panel. Used for doors next to each other.
  • Half overlay: preferred when two doors share a single side panel.
  • Inset: the door is recessed into the cabinet body; used for framed cabinets.

Angle and soft close

Standard hinges open 90-110 degrees; special angle models are used where a wider opening is required. Soft-close (hydraulic) hinges close the door silently and gently.
